Communities & Climate

Wayne County, the largest rural county in Tennessee, 734 Sq. Miles (95% undeveloped), consists of three incorporated communities; Waynesboro, Collinwood and Clifton.

Waynesboro, the county seat, has a population of approximately 2,228 people. Waynesboro has the traditional downtown square. It has a city manager, four commissioners and a mayor. There is a volunteer Fire Department with an insurance rating of 6. The city has an award winning Police Department with 7 full time and 2 part time officers. Waynesboro is served by U. S. Highway 64 (in the process of becoming a four lane from Memphis to Chattanooga) and state route 13 and 99. Waynesboro was incorporated in 1850. The Bell’s Party of the Trail of Tears came thru the area in November 1838.

Collinwood, is the southern most city in Wayne County (actually it is in almost the center of the county). Collinwood was incorporated in 1921 and has approximately 1,024 citizens. It has a city manager, who runs the day to day operations, a mayor and 4 commissioners. It is serviced by a volunteer fire department and has a 7 rating. The police department consists of 3 full time and 1 part time officers. Collinwood is served by state highway 13 and blessed with the Natchez Trace Parkway running through the city.

Clifton, sits in the northwest corner of Wayne County, on the Tennessee River. It was incorporated in 1856 and has approximately 2,699 citizens of which 525 are prisoners, located in two prisons in Clifton. It has a city manager for the day to day operations and a mayor and four commissioners. It is serviced by a volunteer fire department with an insurance rating of 7. The Police Department consists of 6 officers. Clifton is served by state highway 114 and highway 128. Clifton has a great Civil War history and when steamboat was king, Clifton was an important river port. Today it is a relaxing river town with a beautiful view of the river with an occasional barge passing.

Arts

In January 2009 the first arts group was formed in Wayne County. It is Artisans of Wayne County. It is governed by a chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasury and three other board members elected by the membership. There are approximately 40 members.

The Artisans of Wayne County is an umbrella that covers all forms of art: visual, performing, literary, music and cultural.  They are currently working to become a non-profit organization. Their goals for 2009 are to increase membership, increase community awareness of the arts, become a non-profit organization and open an art gallery.

The Artisans of Wayne County believe that they can add to the quality of life in Wayne County and enhance tourism in the county. They know that there are dozens of artists in the county that they have not reached, but that is their goal.
